Core Gameplay Loop
The fundamental cycle of Rusty Rafts revolves around four interconnected systems:
1. Raft Construction & Maintenance
Your raft is your lifeline. Start with a basic platform and expand it using scavenged wood and scrap metal. Use the Repair Hammer (found in floating barrels) to fix damage from weather, sharks, and enemy fire.
2. Resource Scavenging
Collect materials from floating debris and barrels. The Fishing Rod unlocks the fishing minigame, which can yield anything from junk to powerful weapons like Sniper Rifles.
3. Environmental Survival
Dynamic weather events—droughts, floods, and lightning strikes—constantly threaten your raft. The Barometer (premium item) provides early warnings for impending disasters.
4. Combat & Defense
Defend against sharks, rival players, and eventually bosses. Progress from melee weapons to firearms like Pistols and Shotguns, ultimately aiming to capture a Naval Cannon from enemy rafts.
Early Game Phase (0-2km)
This critical phase establishes your foundation. Follow this priority order:
Step 1: Immediate Survival
Upon spawning, you will likely encounter other players. Avoid combat initially—focus on gathering floating barrels and securing a Repair Hammer. Divide labor if playing with a crew.
Step 2: Obtain a Fishing Rod
Search long loot boxes for a Fishing Rod. This is essential for generating resources and potentially acquiring high-tier weapons through the fishing minigame RNG system.
Step 3: Minimal Raft Design
Keep your raft small initially. A smaller profile reduces lightning strike risk, enemy sniper visibility, and resource requirements for repairs.

Classes Overview
Rusty Rafts features three distinct classes:

- Never swim far from your raft — stamina depletes rapidly in water and sharks are always nearby
- Install a Light Tower early — nighttime visibility is extremely limited without it
- Watch the horizon — rival rafts can approach unexpectedly
- Hoard repair materials — running out of wood during combat is fatal
- Fish consistently — the RNG can suddenly grant you a Sniper Rifle that shifts the power balance
